Phase Change Materials (PCM’s) are substances that absorb and release thermal energy during the process of melting and solidifying. When they melt, they absorb heat and when they solidify, they release heat.
Some familiar ones are water based where you add water to glycol etc. to produce a gel pack. There are also salt-based hydrates that we use in space heaters/heat exchangers. Paraffins are used in computers they are oil based, are more volatile in price and are not sustainable. The PCM’s used by Phase Change Energy Solutions are plant based, eco friendly, are easy to install, require no maintenance and are eligible for the new 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC).
This company has products that are specifically designed for medical fridges, data centres, cold storage facilities, bitcoin/cryptocurrency mining etc (and other hydro intensive industries). The PCM can be fine tuned to maintain the specific heat/cold requirement of any client. (They have products from storing vaccine/drugs, to organ transports etc.-again at a specific required temperature). The PCM leverages thermal mass to provide temperature stability (and increase a buildings heating/cooling efficiencies) to reduce energy consumption across a broad range of end uses which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions etc. and lower hydro costs in a sustainable cost-effective manner.
